I know this is a question for a doctor, but mine doesn't seem to know for sure. Does anyone know if oral contact with semen (don't know if he was infected or not)can manifest itself into an outbreak on genitals? There was absolutely NO contact whatsoever except orally with semen. Does anyone know if this is possible?- Re: Is it possible? UserX

This is a reply to # 870,132Herpes is transmitted through direct contact...site of infection coming into contact with the site of transmission. So no, it would not be possible.

MoreThis is a reply to # 870,260Thank you. I just wondered if anyone had heard of a rare case when ingesting semen might bring about an outbreak genitally. Last week I developed blisters around my rectum. Visually, my doctor says it appears likely to be something like herpes. She's done a culture and results are pending. However, I didn't have any contact in that area. I'm at a loss, and a bit frightened at the possibility. Everything I google for these symptoms suggests an STD.

MoreThis is a reply to # 870,452Given the vulnerabilities of the herpes virus, I cannot imagine for a moment that it could pass through the digestive tract intact. Even oral hsv2, while not unheard of, is rare and that's directly at the point of contact.

Was it a type-specific culture that the doctor is doing? It's possible to have HSV1 down there received from someone who has "cold sores" performing oral sex on you. Genital herpes can re-activate from where it goes dormant down a different nerve pathway than the one traveled during the initial infection and can pop up on the buttocks or somewhere in the "boxer shorts" region.- Re: It doesn't mean you don't have h... jennyfromla

This is a reply to # 870,907Thank you for the additional information. The thing is, until a month ago, I've not been sexually active (meaning anything at all) for 18 years. And, the only activity that's happened in the last month, is what I've mentioned. That's the irony of this..for me, anyway! Is it possible to be dormant for 18 years or longer? Even then, there wasn't any anal contact at that time either.
My doctor said she was doing a viral and a bacterial culture. I assume, she's looking for type-specific viral infections, since she seemed to think it looked like a herpes type infection based on appearance.
I know I should just wait on the results. It's just that my mind has been spinning since, whatever this is, showed up on Wednesday.- That's a pretty long "dry spell". Hugo

This is a reply to # 870,992Yes, it's possible that it's been dormant that long. Is there some stress that's going along with this new relationship? By stress, I don't necessarily mean a bad sort of stress, but rather a lot of emotional energy being expended? Probably the most common trigger is emotional, often stress.

Second, it's not really the end of the world or the end of anything. I know how you feel, though, having been where you are a lot of years ago. It'll get better.
I'd really suggest that you visit the support forum over at

and you should be able to get some additional support from some very knowledgeable ladies, some of whom are nurses. They were very helpful to me.

If it's type 2, have no idea how you got this if he didn't have his genitals in contact with your genitals. I can only guess that you have had it for a long time, but it's just made its presence known.
I'm still not clear whether your culture was actually typed as type 2. You said that there was no contact between his genital area and yours, but did he perform oral sex on you? About 1/3 of genital herpes cases are actually the type 1 virus transmitted via oral sex being performed on the newly infected person.

Is there any chance you may have touched yourself down there after touching his genitals? Say to go to the bathroom? I feel I got mine that way. I had never had an outbreak. Messed around with someone who once said they were positive then told me that had just been a "scare." I broke out two weeks to the day after contact with her and on that day she called and said she had something going on down there. All I can think is that I was performing oral on her got up and transfered it to myself while going to the bathroom. When I suggested that she flipped and told me her thing wasn't herpes because it was on her inner thigh.
Do I need to explain how furious I am? Not really with the fact that she evidently gave me herpes but with the denial and attitude I received when trying to discuss it with her. She became a completely irrational, screaming psycho. Thankfully I've done a bunch of stuff learned on here and have been outbreak free for six months. I only had the one... and it sucked!
