You're very welcome plasticat. I assume that infection could be possible, but the fact that nothing seemed to happen around the time you got this way, seems very odd to me. It's an affliction for sure. Why you've been saddled with it, I don't know. It is a cross. Though fat lot of comfort that will be to you.

You would think to a point, any hormonal issues might be helped by diet, as sometimes the body can heal and improve those functions over time. But if the problem is too severe or unbalanced, you may need something to adjust it.

Ok well you've ruled out mercury and the pill (you're male, sorry about that, but I had to ask in case). I gather you're not on any other ongoing medication. Yes, this would do awful things to your self confidence because it is marring your real appearance. My own illness has done the same to my appearance, though in a different way than you.

I will pray for you and hope that you will find answers to this baffling and distressing affliction :-(
