why are secret societies SECRET?

Unlike the Knights of Columbus or the B.P.O.E., freemasonry's membership rolls are not open to inspection by interested outsiders. Freemasons claim to be a charitiable organization, but only about 30% of the money they raise goes to the charities -- they pocket the rest. Of the 10 largest charities in the USA, not one of them devotes less than 50% of the money raised to the charity that is the beneficiary. The lone exception: freemasonry, America's largest "charity."
