In terms of chemistry, diffusion is what happens to a cup full of water if you put kool-aid in it. The kool-aid disperses throughout the liquid.

A more formal definition could be the process by which particles "blend" because of a 'spontaneous' movement caused by heat or by two 'regions' of lower/higher concentration coming into contact.
