Selfishness is what makes great huge corporations - it's the foundation of our economy. If everyone gave their disposable income to helping the homeless, there would be even more unemployed people and a lot less banks and money markets. Instead many people try to make even more money by investing and diversifying. I don't really think the iPod came about as a result of a selfless act, and I don't think it was so successful as a result of millions of selfless acts, but it did creat lost of jobs across the world.
