My daughter has a similar situation. She and her "boyfriend" lived together in non-harmony for 3 years. Then , when it became intolerable, he moved out.
He comes and spends the night with her about twice a month but that's all. I do not know if this is the same with you but: he doesn't move back in with her because he didn't like living with her. She doesn't "get it." He , and her other family members, can only stand being with her in short spurts. She's ok for half an hour; anything after that and we become either angry or uncomfortable.
so, I doubt if your boyfriend feels this way also; but considerable the possibility that he cares for you but he simply wants to keep his distance.
