Re: TMJ Surgery

Hi Lisa
In answer to your questions...

My jaw had to be wired because it was "Repositoned" (Broken in 2 places). I still have the disc (cartilege) in my jaw - my problem was that the disc was dislocated and would not return to it's normal position. The surgery was to increase the space in the joint in the hopes this would allow the disc to return.

Grinding - I did not know I was a grinder until a couple of years ago when all of my problems started. I agree with Bob that I am not sure if a night guard helps with TMJ pain however it does protect the teeth. I have been told that by wearing the splint, it reduces the pressure on the joint if you do grind.

Implants - go to TMJ.ORG - there is some very intering information regarding implants and joint replacements. I find that more articles are against surgery, which I do not fully support however there is some very good information on that site. Another good site is healthboards.com.

Pain Relief - I am a firm believer in Accupuncture. I was going on a weekly basis and found that at least for a few days each week the pain was reduced.

Good luck and let me know how you make out
