Re: TMJ Surgery
I have heard a little about the biofeedback but have never used it. As for massages, you are one of several that have suggested this so I am going to make an appointment.
The exercises I do are mostly relaxation exercises which including Visualizing the back of my throat going soft and at the same time using my left hand to do pressure point therapy down my neck from my ear to the top of my chest. Another one my therapist does for me is pushing on a muscle inside my mouth (sorry I don't remember the name of the muscle but it is the one that holds the two parts of your jaw together, at the back of your teeth). She places pressure on this for 10 seconds. I causes me to gag however I can immediately feel the relief in my joint. My main problem is bad posture that cause pressure on my jaw so I have been working hard to be aware of my posture. I also go for accupunture once a week which is a real help with deep relaxation.
I have been wearing a night guard for 1 1/2 years and a pull forward splint during the day since February. Like you I am not totally convinced about the night guard but I do know that with the pressure I had on my joint, the pull forward splint gave me immediate relief. I went with this surgery because I could not go the rest of my life wearing a pull forward (splint made it very difficult to talk). The surgery was to provide more space in the joint, which in effect was what the pull forward splint did on a temporary basis.
