What's love (but a second hand emotion... - NOT ;)
What Love really is... hummm a tricky thing to answer.
Since Love is the stuff everything is made from, i guess you could say it's the basic form of energy. But, while true, it sounds so bland and doesn't tell much.
And since there's nothing that is not made from love, i guess it means that even hate is love. But probably a distorted form of it (love for own ego). Or maybe not, because it is also fear for own ego, and fears and ego are illusional.
But emotional love is also Love, and perhaps, when it is genuine and sincere, one of the highest forms of it.
I think the highest forms of love are love for fellow beings (friends, people in need, all other people, animals, plants etc), love for your darling one, and, the highest, love for God.
But the closest thing to describing love to me is WARMTH. The warmth in the heart. The warmth that we feel most strongly for example when we see a very very dear person who we didn't see for a long time. The thing we feel in our 'heart' then, this "heeeey man it's you hey it's been so long how are you what's up i am so vary glad to see you", this feeling which i can't describe better than soul-warmth, is the closest thing i can compare to this love of God for us. I think rudensky will agree that warmth is a good word for this love emanating from god. Only it's an incredible quantity of warmth, but without it becoming 'hot'. This shining and warmth that kinda draws two hearts together like a magnet is Love.
That's love as a feeling. But that's the essence, and when i say that God IS Love, i mean that He is this feeling. Feeling is maybe a poor and bland word for that, but still it's closest, even if it's miles away from the thing it tries to describe.
In practice, love means doing things for another. Doing something that means a certain sacrifice (time, energy, money, effort, even pain) on your part, for the benefit of another being. And that's what God wants us to do. God loves us all and wants us all to be happy, and wants to HELP us all be happy, but (in my experience) God doesn't have "hands". That is, not on his own: OUR HANDS ARE GODS HANDS. God helps us through other people. If God is 'interventionist god', it is in as much as He can intevene through other people, but that happens only as much as the people are willing to do it, because He doesn't force anyone to do anything. We are all FREE, even from God. And when a person indeed helps us, although it is God that helped us through her/him, it is that person's own will to help us that allowed it to happen. God only inspires the will to help, the goodness. He doesn't force it. And ultimately it is the feeling of love, feeling of warmth, that made the person help us.
In one word, this is called COMPASSION.
