Have you read any of the Converstions with God books. I recommend them. They are very insightful and I really could resonate with most of what he writes. There are many paths and everyone needs to find theirs. And yes, stay away from organized religions or any religion that tries to tell you how to think or that you are going to be punished if you don't follow thier path.

Once you are sincerely seeking you will be lead to the correct path for you.
