I have studied quantic physic as well as relativists theories.

My feeling so far is that the only law which govern the universe and we are so far sure of is that " nothing is created nothing is lost". Thatis also what say the law of equivalence of particules and energy .
In such a description of the universe by a single law, time has no importance for describing it. Time therefore doesnot exist at the universe scale. Of course this act of trust also includes the realisation that the universe is unlimited (it is so big as far as we can see that we can almost see that it is unlimited) and has always been there and will always be there. The factor time enters only in the equations to describe local parts of the universe at a given stage of transformation from particles to energy and the opposite For example a big bang start locally from pure energy and turn in 15 billions years into particules (where the quantic physic describes the phenomenas) and further into galaxies (where the relativist gravitation theories apply) including planets (on which like the earth the more simple Newton mecanic laws apply )
In such a local part of the universe where a transformation from energy to particles occur, you may use the factor time to describes one point of the evolution of the system.
When a transformation from particles to energy occurs on such a large scale of the inverse of a big bang (for example when the massives black holes which are supposed to be present at the center of all galaxies eventually swallow all stars and swallow each other up to reaching a new so far unknow instable level of energy concentration) the time factor can also be used to describes the reverse phenomena.
But nevertheless the basic law of the universe doesnot change "nothing create itself, nothing disappear, during such a transformation (from big bang to big black holes it is only a small vibration at the scale of the universe !)

To come back to your poetic subject of a man pretending to travel in time here is my view of the problem:

1. The man travelling in time will meet himself or his parents beeing carrier of the same particles he is made of. This fact violate the law of conservation of particles and energy if the time-travel machine doesnot consume a huge quantity of energy to create a body out of energy. Good luck for that operation to be done even in 1000 years.
2. The other problem is that in 2036, the state of the universe as it was in 2000 doesnot exist anymore as in local universe transformation the use of the factor time imply simply modifications of the particles entity which for a major part are irreversibles (at the thermodynamic sense). The poetic view of an universe dated 2036 existing in parallel to a universe dated 2000 violate the law of conservation of the universe as it imply multiplication of the particles.
2. On the other hand if one admit the infinity of the universe and the eternity of same, locally provided a very very very very huge amount of time has elapsed ,the same person will certainly live again the very same life (because the very same particles will combines themselves with the very same formula (molecular then genetic)into the very same person at the very same place (the earth reborn) BUT AND THAT IS THE BIG PROBLEM, will have no idea of having lived a previous life in the same form because particles and energy have no memory.
That is the only way we could speak of a person travelling in time physically and if you think further the time will in fact be the same if you count it from the (other) big bang giving cause to the very same results (which will obviously demand a near infinity of big bangs tries) But dont wary at the universe scale the time doesnot exist so what about a near infinity to give yourself another try on life. And why not an infinite number of living opportunities .

Last but not least you dont have to travel in time to make at this juncture gloomy previsions about the future. You have just to go back to your basic mathematics and the basic of economy to realise that the horrendous speculative economic conditions we have created out of hot air (that is borrowing with no chance of beeing able to reimbourse) will draw all of us in big economic then social problems sooner than later. Of course when a great Depression worse than the 1929 will occur civil wars are possible but I feel that the way it is now engaged this could be a religious inspired one.
