The best fast for you is one that is good for your Dosha. It might not even be a total fast, it could be a very limited or mono diet, like eating nothing but Kichadi. A total fast is recommended if you have arhtritis. Otherwise, you just need to fast for a day or so every now and again to give your body a rest.
A good cleansing/revitalizing fast that isn't too demanding is this 3-day fast:
day 1 - prune, apple or green grape juice, + water and herbal tea.
Day 2 - fresh-squeezed veggie juices. If you don't have a juicer or can't buy it from a juice bar (you really only need one large serving), skip to day 3.
Day 3 - Potassium broth. Simmer on low heat thick peelings of potato, chopped parsley, carrots, beets, garlic, onion, add cayenne pepper and any other veggies you like. Drink the broth and leave the rest.
