This is where I first asked about some symptoms that seems to be associated with taking a large dose of diluted calcium hydroxide in a drink suggest to ease pain. I could not find the post where I described later symptoms which included irregular heartbeat, terrible joint pain and swelling, and most frightening of all, my kidneys seems to stop working. I drank lots of water, but swelled up. Finally, before going to the emergency room, a thirty mile trip for me, I tried a dose of Epsom salt. Over several hours my kidneys began to work and a lot of fluid came out. The heartbeat became regular. However the joint pain and headache remained and even now, my legs are even weaker than usual, but I feel much better. I don't know if it was a calcium overload or, what I suspect, a violent reaction to the caustic effect of the calcium hydroxide. Remember hydroxide minerals are extremely alkaline and dangerously caustic, sodium hydroxide is lye; potassium hydroxide is potash. Both chemicals have their uses, but are not for human consumption. I believe there are much better alternative to the pickling lime for supplementing calcium; but that is something each individual must decide for himself. Some people swear by it, but I will never use it again.
