No, you don't need a lot of it. I simply cut a 1 ounce silver bullion bar in half to create my two electrodes. You can use the silver wires successfully, just be sure you keep them unbent, that's the biggest problem with the wires as opposed to using a bullion bar that you cut in half longwise, they'll never bend and create hotspots that causes them to degrade & be used up faster.
