You should try culturing their saliva to see if any bacteria grows may take a few months but would be cool to know if it was. I think they've only successfully cultured t. whipplei one time in vivo. It's a common bacteria found in our saliva and especially in root canals probably from chewing food that has the bacteria on it like fruits and vegetables which come from the soil where it's found.
