Ask your GYN to fit you for a diaphragm - I wish I would have done that FIRST, before Mirena. As long as you use spermicidal jelly with it and carefully follow the directions, it's VERY effective for birth control (and it's certainly more effective than using nothing at all).
I believe that it's the levonorgestrel causing most of the problems with Mirena. And the reason I say that is because I had to use Plan B one time, and it was like a mini-version of what happened to me with Mirena.
Now, I don't know if some units are faulty, and it dumps 5-years worth of hormone all at once, or if certain women are just predisposed to be highly sensitive (or even allergic) to this synthetic hormone - and obviously, Bayer isn't going to the trouble to tell us what the problems are with these IUDs.
