Re: herbs for grey hair

Hi desertlili. This video is about a hair dye. I do not know if these dyes give a natural colour to the hair or an artificial looking one. I have never used a dye and at the moment don't plan to use one.

I read about Dr. Christopher's advice that rinsing one's hair with yarrow tea after shampooing, and secondarily, drinking it, would remove toxins from the hair and decongest the blood and lymph in the head area, thus possibly restoring natural hair colour.

At other places people also write about Dr. Christopher's advice to apply castor oil, olive oil and wheat germ oil on consecutive days on the scalp for hair growth and treating grey hair.

I have been doing castor oil and olive oil twice a week each, for a month or so now, and yarrow tea for a week. It is too early to say anything for certain, but the yarrow tea does seem to improve circulation in my head. I get a slightly runny nose after I rinse my hair with yarrow tea, which is a surprising and to me, a good effect, especially because I have lymphatic congestion in that area. And the oils help my vata constitution so I would use them irrespective of their effect on my grey hair.

Earlier, for 2.5 years I used to massage my scalp with bhringraj oil, which is probably the most important hair oil in ayurveda. It is not supposed to reverse grey hair but it is believed to have the ability to grow hair where it has stopped growing, and improve the growth of already existing hair. I have slight hair loss around the temples which is very gradually increasing. Bhringraj oil didn't reverse it, although the hair loss might have been faster had I not been using bhringraj. I can't say anything for sure, really.

On a more general level it seems that a clean liver could restore grey hair especially if it is prematurely grey. This is what I gather from reading Andreas Moritz and others. My ayurvedic doctor in response to my query about grey hair just said, "work on pitta", which I think again goes back to liver health. I am 31 and 30% grey, mostly on the sides, and I think this is more than just genetic.

So for three weeks I have been taking an ayurvedic herb - manjishtha - for lymph cleansing and liver, but it is too early to see results on the hair I suppose. This week I also started taking some tibetan medicines for the liver, and am also considering adding triphala which works primarily on the colon but also on the liver, if it does not feel like too much.

Yarrow, of course, is a herb from the western herbal tradition. So that's three herbal systems together!
