Intense and frequent hunger following a fast

I did a 7 day fast last week, and from day 4 or day 5 of refeeding (today is day 8) I feel much more hunger than I used to before the fast or immediately after it. The hunger is more in intensity and also in frequency. I've occasionally read that this can tend to happen after a fast and one must avoid overeating if one goes through this.

But I am trying to understand why this is the reason. What I experience is a sensation in the upper part of the stomach and in the chest which has a burning, gnawing quality. I do not know if I can call this true hunger, but this is the sensation following which I eat now and also before the fast. I do consider it hunger even though I am mindful of the true hunger versus artificial and toxic hunger idea.

To me it seems that the body is absorbing more nutrients from the food, and is more aware of its nutritional needs, both of which make hunger more intense and more frequent. So, I listen to the body and eat, while being very mindful of the sensations in my stomach, colon and the rest of the body so that I can perceive whether I am overloading myself or not.

The result is that I am often eating about 4 meals a day rather than 3. In the extra meal I usually only have fruit. Twice I also ate after 8 PM, something I don't usually do. Once I sensed that I overate and could not digest all I ate and had a lot of gas the next morning. I took an enema a little later in the day and that brought things back to normal. Mostly, however, I think I eat only till my body can easily take it.

I am unable to go completely by Shelton's words when he writes that one should just ignore this extra hunger and it will go away in a couple of weeks. I try to live by listening to my body while keeping theory in mind, but it is hard to live just by theory, which is what I would be doing if I were eating just as usual. So I am just being aware of the body sensations when I eat and I stop when there is heaviness in the stomach or fatigue in that area or elsewhere.

What does intense and frequent hunger in the days following a fast mean? How does one deal with it?
