'The belief that the Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God is a basic tenet of the Christian faith.'
I'm sure you are not surprised that I have to disagree with this statement somewhat. The New Testament didn't exist at the time that Christ preached His gospel, yet all the basic tenets of the Christian faith had already been laid out by Christ regardless of the whether or not they were written down or not. Therefore your statement cannot be true, otherwise you are saying the the disciples of Jesus didn't believe in one of the basic tenet's of the Christian faith because they had no New Testament yet.
I think what you really mean to say is that the belief that the Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God is a basic belief that most current Christian sects have in common. If you want to call it a basic tenet of the Christian faith, then it had to be a concept that existed at the time that Christ would have been alive on the Earth.
