Maybe it is a parasite that digs in and eats whatever that stuff is and then keeps growing like tapeworm. It's probably carried by the same tick as lyme disease. A newly discovered parasite. Maybe its the start of the rope worm and over time the tentacles tangle together to form the ropes.
