** Please be careful!!! This is a dog!!!! **
In all the excitement of this forum about eating raw foods and orange juice fasting, PLEASE bear in mind that a pure fruit diet is NOT biologically appropriate for dogs. Canines have the anatomy to consume raw meaty bones, not a pure fruit diet. You only have to look at wolves and hyenas in the wild to see what is and isn't appropriate! THIS IS LIVING WITH NATURE. Don't try and have a dog eat a human diet!
Even humans who go on the Atkins (all meat and fat) and O blood group (lots of red meat) diets will loose a lot of weight and end up feeling great .. but a few years down the line they will be met with diseases linked with uric acid problems from excess protein consumption.
Dogs do not break down sugary foods and starches easily, they do not produce those enzymes.
Your dog should not be used as a living experiment!! Please do some research and look into the BARF program for dogs and look up Dr Billingtons website about this. Dogs do well on raw meaty bones, offal and around 20% raw veg and fruit (found in the intestines of animals when killed for food).
No doubt your dog will do very well on the raw fruit for a short period of time, especially if he has consumed a lot of commercial/processed dog food and junk, which may be even worse. But in time, it may be a completely different story.
I don't mean to be a kill joy, but I love animals and they NEED to be given an APPROPRIATE diet, not one that is suitable for humans or ones that feel good to our ego. Experiement on yourself, not your dog.
If you were in the care of a wolf, and you were only given raw meat, how long do you think you'd survive in good health? See what I'm getting at?
This is my puppy, who has been eating the BARF, raw meaty bones diet since I've had him. The great thing about the BARF diet is that the minute he is full, he stops eating. Commercial foods are often full of artificial chemicals that do not satisfy the nutritional needs of dogs, so they continue to eat and eat and get fat.
