4 grams of triphala is not a high dose would be about an average dose, this would be a dosage for someone who was very mildly constipated. Since triphala is a natural product, just a blend of three different fruits, you can take as much as you need until you get good results. You can increase daily until you are moving the bowels regularly, you should feel the results immediately, or at least within a couple of days, if you don't get results then you need a higher dosage. In the U.S. it is a very expensive product and they are usually in a pill form that has a very small dose in each pill. In India triphala is dirt cheap and they sell huge bags of it in powder form, you just mix as much as you want in warm water. In pill form, you feel like you are taking a large dose because you have to take so many pills. If you increase the dosage and still don't get relief, look into other natural herbs such as Lower Bowel Balance. Probably, no matter what herbs you take, you will have to take much higher dosages than other people as you are severely constipated.
