I just checked with my local hardware store and they do indeed sell muriatic acid. The question now becomes how much I'd need to use and at what concentration. The product I'm looking at here is 31.45%.

Also, your glycerine idea sounds great. I'm definitely going try that method rather than trying to measure free chlorine in the mixture.
