Re: How did your AF start?
After I realized I was bipolar I learned I had a very severe case of AF. I was already taking Elavil to help with me sleep and appetite, and to help with my depression. My MD sent me to a psychiatrist who wanted me to take lithium for my bipolar and keep taking the Elavil. I kept mentioning to him that my ND had diagnosed me with AF, and he completely dismissed this. He said that I had become "obsessed" with the AF diagnosis, and wanted me to take a drug for obsessive/compulsive disorders in addition to the other two.
I kept taking the Elavil because it was helping me sleep and maintain my appetite and weight. I was able to stop myself from ramping up into hypomania by changing my thoughts and behavior, and never again had a hypomanic episode. The thought of taking three psychiatric drugs, none of which would help my AF, was ridiculous to me. I stopped seeing the Psychiatrist From Hell, and got supplements for my AF from my ND. They didn't help, then I went to another ND who prescribed some glandulars which helped immediately. Their effect was immediate, dramatic and very welcome. This was the beginning of my recovery from AF.
