I do recall HC talking about it not being necessary to kill only to stop reproduction.
Like disinfection a sponge in your microwave, the bacteria are mostly still there but no longer able to reproduce.
Since nearly all have short life cycles that is enough termination for me...

Now that I think about it, this may be a key in zapper treatment as well.
