I am suggesting quite a lot of exercise. I recommend reading the Omnivore's Dilemma. It is the first stop for this type of approach to diet.
This extensive amount of exercise makes your body extremely good at utilizing blood Sugar effectively. Think about it, look how healthy a body builder or athlete is. Doing this amount of exercise for 10 days and sipping (to help reduce the spikes you speak of) throughout the day, could do a lot of good.
It is 5 to 10 days? An experiment. How bad could it go?
