On cayenne the byword is the hotter the better. Cayenne is rated in Scolville units or HU (heat Units) and modern herbalist say that in order to have theraputic effect it should be a minimum of 90K HU. Most regular grocery store bought cayenne is pretty weak in the 20 to 40K HU range.
