  Tonight in pharmacology class the pharmacist said OTC potassium is very bad for us (he said poison) and that the only good kind is by prescription. I don't believe 1/3 of what he says, as he's a drug pusher, but thought I'd mention it here for Marcy.

That's funny.  The problem with some potassium sources in that they can cause ulcerations of the stomach.  This includes prescription potassium, which is potassium chloride.  I have never heard of this being an issue with potassium supplements, which are potassium gluconate.  So the real poison is prescription potassium.
