Re: mirena coil and rheumatoid arthritis
I started noticing weird joint pain and swelling about 6 months after I had a Mirena inserted. After about 12 months I couldn't walk without pain. My feet were swollen, (generally all the time and sporadically in various places) and I had severe pain in the balls of my feet when I walked.
I was than diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. (
Psoriasis on my scalp that had been dormant for about 20 years also flared up again after the Mirena was inserted.)A bone scan showed inflammation in my feet, ankles, wrists and hands.
After 15 months I had the Mirena removed and immediately one of my fingers improved. My feet took about six months but now I am walking normally and they are slowly going back to something near normal size. I still have one swollen finger joint but compared with the state that I was in 12 months ago it is a small problem.
A rheumatologist wants me to take methotrexate, an immunosuppressant. So far I have resisted and have had good results with naturopathic treatments, e.g. caprylic acid for clearing candida and natural anti-inflammatories.
No doctors, (gynaeocologist, rheumatologist, G.P. etc), have acknowledged that the Mirena may have had something to do with this, although acupuncturist and naturopath immediately recognised that something that causes a 'weak' immune response could conceivably cause a major one or perhaps exacerbate an existing low level immune system problem. Then, of course, there is the silicone factor - see posts by Jane123.
My cycle has not yet returned to normal although this could be a consequence of my age, (50).
I would recommend getting rid of the Mirena and seeing how you go.
Good luck
