Are you SURE you're watching water kefir vids and not kombucha vids??? Every thing I have read including the instructions sent to me say a tid lid! I never had one explode yet! Just don't fill the water to the brim but leave about in inch of space on top.

If you're getting fizz using the paper towel/rubberband thing then do that if you're more comfortable with it.
