Nature
The Trust of Trees . . .
Because the leaves appear each year
we need not fear their falling ~
and when dark nights bring morning sun
another night is calling
From seeming deaths and dark unknowns
never endings ~ deep and doubtful
come brand new life and liberty
revealing what is joyful
With branches bare the trees don’t fear
but wait with dignity ~
they haven’t died without their leaves
though appearing differently
Trees know the sun comes up each day
to guide them with its light ~
to bring their growth so gradually
so they can fill out right
So unconcerned a tree must be
to never bother trying
a different way of getting green
like paint or theft or lying
The coming of the sun appears
to happen overnight ~
and trees are just like you and me
so naked in the light
For darkness to repeat itself
we cannot seem to bear ~
we try to keep our old leaves on
our past we try to wear
A tree lets go of what once was
and gladly waits the darkness ~
its branches lift majestically
through night and nature’s harshness
The tree can’t run or hide its plight
it can’t give up and die ~
held in its place by Love and Grace
kept hidden from my eye
In growing up and leafing green
the tree need only search
the Earth where it was once a seed
the soil that gave it birth
It grows straight down as well as up
in two ways ~ not just one
the need is met in its foundation
life-giving it becomes
A bird will nest within its arms
and fruit it will display ~
the trusting root receives the Power
to give each leaf away . . .
