Re: Let's not forget...
So while you believe in your god you escape the punishment. As long as you live as your god tells you to live, through the bible, than you will be loved. As long as you praise this god, you will be saved from eternal death, the pits of hell, whatever you want to call it.
So it all does come down to fear, whatever rosey picture about love people want to put out, there would be no reason for all the praising and doing what your told, if there was no reward, or punishment at the end of it all.
People can and do have wonderful lives, free from all of this. They do so without the love of some outside entity, and they do so without the fear of what that entity will do to them if they don't behave.
Its a bit like being a child, needing the love of a parent, and fearing the punishment of a parent when you get out of line, or don't recognise the authority of that parent. When you grow up, you choose your own path, you live by your own strengths and fail by your own weaknesses, in other words , you take responsibility for yourself, and you no longer need the approval of your parent, nor fear their dissapproval. I think this is what happens when people leave christianity, or other belief systems, they grow up.
