Obtaining a degree in a particular field is merely a path to gather knowledge, when this is done in a formal setting it is called a degree, when learning or gathering knowledge is done informally it is not called a degree.
To say that obtaining a degree in a particular field is a certificate of mediocrity is not only insulting to those that choose this method of gaining knowledge, but is ignorant of the fact that even though many people choose this way of learning, it does not necessarily mean that those people are then unable to accept or learn new or different information.
Whether formal (degree) or informal, each method of gaining information is equally valid. Its what the individual does with this knowledge or information that is important, not how it is obtained.
Most scientists that I have worked with have no prejudice against informal learning, but they do have a prejudice against vocal ignorance.
