I think it's about the removal of interference within their consciousness that allows for this.

We tend to get in our own way with our self generated stories. It isn't the ego we need to transcend but perhaps using the ego circuit in it's proper context and that is as a pointer, a carver of reality. Doven (Lucid Cre8tor) calls this a reality cursor and I agree with the concept.
