I didn't say "God's love has to be earned". I said it's how we behave that shows our love.

Just like your little one is happy when she knows she made you happy. God told us what makes Him happy and it should make us happy to do it.

1John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

If that pastor says working to do right in God's eyes is breaking the ten commandments, that would be more likely to make one think that there's no way to please God. Do you see what a contradiction that is?
