Re: I began taking the MMS unactivated last night...
Hello #32793,
Sodium chlorite is not very effective at purifying water, but purifying is different than distilling. Distilling involves boiling the water and collecting the vapor.
On the other hand, chlorine dioxide is very effective at purifying water.
To use unactivated sodium chlorite to purify water, you first need to determine the bacterial demand of the water, then adjust the amount of sodium chlorite added to meet this demand. The purification process takes 6 - 12 hours after which you once again need to test to see if the water is pure, and what the levels of disinfection by products are at.
Sodium chlorite is used to keep stored water fresh, but this involves water that has already been purified and you are just trying to keep biofilm from forming in the stored water. You can keep water for around 5 years by adding trace amounts of sodium chlorite to it. It can also be used to improve the taste of water that has already been purified, and can reduce any bacteria that may have been missed during the initial purification, or has been introduced back into the water system during distribution.
The EPA testing has determined that if your concentration of chlorite and chlorine dioxide are below about 1 PPM, it is safe to drink without experiencing adverse effects.
