--- He didn't say that the syrup "caused" the decay.

This is what he did say --

""He said the Sugar in the syrup becoming acidic on the surface of the tooth burns the enamel.""

This rings true to me.
Once the enamel has a hole burned through it at the gum line the softer tissue is susceptible to the bacterias of the mouth.

I also had this happen when I didn't have the teeth cleaned for three years.
The build up of plack burned a hole leaving the tooth susceptable.
