Re: The safety and effectiveness of oleander extract

So what other cardiac glycosides are present other than oleandrin, odoroside, and neritaloside? Oleandrigenin is a aglycone.

Here his some good reading for people as well:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleander

It just really worries me that people are being told to make their own "soup" First of all people do not always follow directions. For example, a local man ended up in the hospital after drinking 35% peroxide undiluted because he did not bother to read the directions to dilute it first to a 3% solution then add one drop to a glass of water....

And many of the properties attributed to oleander, such as aptosis, can be achieved by numerous safer plants. For example the spice turmeric. Oleander inhibits IL-8 as well, just like turmeric. Oleander inhibits fibroblast growth factor, just like turmeric. Oleander inhibits nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), just like turmeric. Oleander inhibits activator protein-1 (AP-1), just like turmeric. So what is the real difference? well, for starters turmeric is safe and readily available, not to mention cheap (about $0.40/ounce). It does not need to be prepared and it can be ingested safely in high doses if required. Not to mention that it sure tastes great on a lot of foods. Turmeric also suppresses the inflammatory compounds lipoxygenase (LOX), tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-1. This is important since inflammation has been linked to cancer. And unlike oleander, turmeric blocks mitosis of cancer cells inhibiting their growth, and inhibits gelatinase B, which is involved in the angiogenesis process by which malignant tumors feed. Curcuminoids in turmeric are also very powerful free radical scavengers, and have demonstrated excellent antimutagenic properties. Curcuminoids are also highly antiviral, which is essential since the vast majority of cancers have viral origins. Turmeric also kills cancer forming bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. As a cholesterol reducer turmeric can help reduce cancer by inhibiting cancer cell formation. Cancer cells have an abnormally high level of cholesterol in their cell membranes. And by inhibiting platelet aggregation turmeric can help prevent cancer cells from metastasizing.

I have a lot of study abstracts on this spice as it relates to cancer inhibition saved on my other computer. If you want to read them I recommend going to PubMed and typing in curcumin and cancer.
