Re: Paul and Autoimmune Expert

Oleander should not be fooled with unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Oleander contains 3 cardiac glycosides, which can stop the heart very easily.

I was fooling around with trying to make some new heart drugs with Oleander years ago. When I added some bicarbonate to the brew it made it smell very sweet so I took one whiff. To make a long story short it bottomed out my blood pressure for 2 1/2 hours despite drinking a Coke. I could not find a radial or carotid pulse and my friend said I was white as a ghost.

For those not familiar with cardiac glycosides these are Sugar compounds found in various plants that have direct effects on the cardiovascular system. For example foxglove, which is regarded as being highly poisonous and is the source for the drug digitalis. Cardiac glycosides slow the heart, lower the blood pressure, and act as diuretics.

We had a case here a few years ago where a man was burning Oleander leaves in his yard. His dog ran through the smoke killing the dog instantly.

Once again this plant is very poisonous, every part of it, and even honey made from the pollen. It should only be processed and used by professionals that really know what they are doing!
