if it came to be that we had to be wary and hide food from neighbors, friends, etc, I don't think I'd even want to go there. Everyone starving but me? yikes.

We've been lucky that in this society we've never been faced with such decisions.

It would be awful. I'm not one to turn people away. But, if we only had a little left, if WE had planned well for lean times and THEY hadn't...?

what would be the point in living a little longer if our brothers and sisters are starving? what joy in that?
