I'm sorry but this is all incorrect. Throughout history contrails have not necessarily "quickly vanished" given the temperature and humidity of that layer of air. Have a look:

Quite simply, the only thing that has changed are size of the engine, engine efficiency (thicker contrail due to more vapor), and the amount of traffic.
