Because DMSA is very effective, but dangerous if not done right.

Good point rokybird about not chelating until 6 months after Amalgam removal. Though I don't know if STEH mentioned that.

It has been stated that DMSA doesn't cross the blood brain barrier, and that is the whole point isn't it. Thats what makes it better to use. If you have a high load of mercury its safer not to cross the blood brain barrier until the bulk of it is removed from the body. Otherwise you send mercury around your brain unnecessarily during chelation.

An interesting point to note, if you are using DMSA its very important to be aware of a good protocol. Andy Cutlers is by far the most thorough I have ever read. He explains the importance of avoiding high sulphur foods, keeping strictly to a small dose exactly every 4hrs, including during the night time. It might seem wise not to use alpha lipoic acid, barley grass, wheat grass, spirulina, blue green algae or seeweed during the initial bulk removal othewise it will be crossing the blood brain barrier.

Avoiding garlic, dried fruits and any other high sulphur foods is wise to avoid during this time as it burdens the body with further chelation which you don't want, believe me, when chelating with DMSA.

Its also the best chelator for Lead. Anybody over 20 is most likely to have lead in their body from car fumes that used to use lead in petrol, not to mention other places. Lead is just as dangerous as Mercury.

Once you have removed your bulk of mercury and lead, then Andy Cutle explains the effective combination of Alpha Lipoic Acid with DMSA to then begin removing from the brain.
