Confused with Candida Parapsilosis Culture results and next steps
I am a 49, had a tummy tuck on 4/18/2017 with 2 Jackson Pratt (JP) drains. Surgery was good, no complications.
My goal was to go back to work after 7 days, on 4/26, the doctor said there should be no issues but 7 to 10 days is the norm.
About a week after surgery I noticed swelling in my legs (felt like bags of water around my legs when I walked) and pubic area was swollen/hard. At my next appointment, the nurse said it was fluid and gravity pulling it out of my body after surgery. UGH, OK!
On 4/30, I spiked 103.5 fever, lots of pain and inflamed on the upper thighs and pubic area. I called the Doc, he put me on Cipro 500MG and saw me the next day. He said I had cellulitis tops of thighs and pubic area and one 1 JP drain was removed.
Next visit 5/3, not much relief with the Cipro, I was very red, swollen and in a lot of pain in this area (all below the incision site). Doc put in a drain tube in my pubic area so he could culture and see if there was any fluid in the area that would drain out. He said drainage at the site was minimal, he left the drain tube in to see if it would drain anymore. He also put me on an additional antibiotic of Sulfameth/TMP 800/160MG.
5/4 Lab mess up on 1st culture so had to go back 5/5 for another culture.
On the 5/5 visit you could see the area was getting better the 2nd antibiotic was helping the swelling, pain in thighs and lower pubic area got much better. The upper pubic area closer to the incision is still hard, warm to the touch and tender.
5/8 results are back, I get them before the Nurse called:
Gram Stains Results: No Organisms seen
Culture Results: Rare Candida Parapsilosis
Nurse called said that nothing was found, then I questioned about the Candida her response was well it’s moist in that area and yeast will grow, ewe! That was it!
5/9 visit Doc took out 2nd JP drain tube. He left on in the tube in my pubic area for the cellulitis. When I asked about the Candida Parapsilosis he said that is could have been picked up by the skin, that this is nothing to worry about.
So with all this information should I explore this Candida Parapsilosis further ask for additional test or just accept the Doctors statement? If I should what test should I ask for?
