Google AdvertisementHello, I am not a heavy yoga practitioner, but I have really taken a liking to this particular asana (as well as a couple other specific ones). All I can really seem to find on the internet about it are typical westernized-yoga websites that proclaim it to be the "king of all asanas" and list a number of physical and "spiritual" benefits, but I can't seem to find much about possibly negative aspects of this asana.
I ask because, shortly after I started practicing Shirshasana, I noticed that I was developing what appeared to be burst capillaries / small blood vessels on my face, mostly around the eye / upper cheek / forehead region. It wasn't a massive amount or anything, but enough to be noticeable when looking in the mirror from a ~3 foot distance. They look like just small red dots or thin lines scattered about here and there. There has never been any pain involved or any other negative side-effects that I can detect, so I'm not seriously worried about it, but it does make me curious...
If the head stand is causing some of the more fragile and thin blood vessels on my face to burst (I assume this is because of the increased blood pressure which that area isn't used to), then what about internally? Could something similar be happening within the head, brain, eyes, etc? And if so, could this cause any prolonged damage to those organs?
On a positive note, I have noticed recently that there doesn't seem to be as many "spots" or "lines" appearing after practicing this asana. And I have even been increasing my time to 5-10 mins (as opposed to the 3-5 mins that I was maintaining when first starting out). Hopefully this is because the blood vessels in my head and face have been strengthened since practicing this asana, but I am still curious to hear about any possible health concerns (no matter how small) related to this asana, because I can't seem to find many on the web (except for those related to people who have known medical problems).
Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

Before, I would have quickly replied no health risks. However, a friend of mine recently had a stroke...almost died. He practiced this asana often. Now I'm not so sure.....
I am not an "expert" in yoga but he is. And one of the theories that possible caused this massive stroke was this asana. Everyone was shocked because of his apparent perfect health and pure lifestyle. The medical doctors theorized a genetic factor. He is coming along pretty well now, after a couple years of intensive physical therapy, with still some left side paralysis.
There are people on this forum with alot more expertise than me...but I wanted to share something personal....

Hearing about your friend does cause a bit of concern. But I suppose there could be many other factors involved, possibly not even related to the asana.
Do you happen to know your friend's dosha imbalance / body type? I don't know much about it, but I have read that those of a Pitta type should not perform heating asana/pranayama exercises (or should only do so sparingly)... and I have noticed that this asana does definately seem to cause increased body heat. It may be completely unrelated and if he is very knowledgable about yoga then he probably knows all about that, but just something to consider I guess.
I should note that I am only 23 years old and fairly healthy (no medical problems that I am aware of) except for being a bit underweight and not getting as much exercise and sunlight as I probably should... so I'm not all that worried about anything as serious as a stroke, although I'll definately keep it in mind.
I noticed you said "Before, I would have quickly replied no health risks." ... is this because you haven't heard of any other problems resulting from the practice of this asana until your friend's incident?

There could be many factors involved....it's been a mystery to all who know him....
We've all kind of chalked it up to karma and a necessity of his soul's journey....
Prior to this, I have not heard of any other problems....

My suggestion to you would be next time you are in sirsasana, make an effort to relax your face. Let the eye settle into the sockets, let your cheeks settle, totally relax your mouth, let your eyebrows settle. With every exhilation, relax your face. Do this while you press firmly into the floor with your fore arms. Keep your shoulderd in line with your ears, hips, knees and ankles. Press your feet to the sealing. Do not stare at the floor, try not to stare at all. Try to look inward. Your breath should be smooth and even. Your body should not shake. If (or when) you feel any pressure in your ears, come down. If (or when) your eyes start to harden, come down. Even if your body is still feeling strong. You should follow this asana with sarvangasana (shoulder stand) or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (shoulder bridge). Hold this posture for as long as you hold Sirsasana. This will bring balance to your practice.
Do you attend a class? Do you have a teacher? Do you have a copy of the book Light on Yoga, by BKS Iyengar? I find that book very helpful. Good luck with your practice! Hope I was helpful.Advertisement

I have tried breathing through different parts of the body (upper chest, stomach, etc) but it doesn't seem to make any difference, the slight balance shift still occurs. It's not really a problem unless I'm not paying attention and happen to inhale too fast, which can throw off my balance quicker than I can counter-balance... Is it normal for breathing to cause mild shifts in balance like this? Or could something be wrong with my posture?
I don't attend any classes or anything. I would be surprised if any worthwhile classes even existed in my city. 90% of my yoga info is from the books written by Sivananda (and others at The Divine Life Society) that are freely available (such as "Kundalini Yoga", "The Science of Pranayama", "The Practice of Brahmacharya", and many many others).
What exactly do you mean by eyes hardening?
Also, should my feet be flat as if standing straight up, or should my toes be pointing toward the ceiling?

Breath evenly, don't try to control or grip your breath. That is the relaxation part, Observing the breath. Jerking your body with the breath is no good. So be careful with that counter-balancing. Do you ever fall out of the posture? Do you use the wall?
For the softening of the eyes, it's hard to explain. The next time you in head stand, you will know about what I am talking about. Straining, exerting too much effort. That will feel like your eyes are bulging out. Or, maybe you might feel pressure behind your eyes. Be sure to pay special attention to your ears too. I wish I could explain better. The broken blood vessels in your face is no good.
Feet should be neither pointed or flat. Press your heals up while lengthing the front of your foot and shin. Don't flex your feet. Make sence?
Take a look at Light on Yoga if you can. I can't say I know much of the books you mentioned. I'm curious. I will have to look them up. Hope that is helpful.Advertisement

Just like if you are standing on your feet and start to sway in one direction, you tense up muscles in your feet and legs to counter it. It's just that, if I'm not paying attention and a quick change comes (from taking a quick breath or something), it can cause a large "sway" faster than I can counter-balance. But I've only fallen from this a couple times, it's not really something that happens often. Usually my breath is very slow and deep, with random pauses that seem to come naturally as I try to focus on my balance or other things internally.
I started out using a wall, so I could take more risks while experimenting with balance and weight distribution. Once I got the hang of it I moved away from the wall and for the most part can hold the posture for 5 to 10 mins before feeling like I should come down. I've only fallen a few times so far since moving away from the wall.

It feels the same as when you are going up in an airplane. I am experiencing something similar just recently, after having practiced the headstand for extended holding times for many years. A response I received is that the tissues around the eyes are very thin and sensitive, and if the blood is unclean, and then you are standing on your head and increasing blood flow to the area, that toxins will easily escape through these tissues...hence the reddish, "burst blood vessel" experience.
The advice you have received here is good. I would ask whether you have attempted any cleansing? What is your diet like?
I am undergoing some strong hormonal shifting recently and am continuing to cleanse and finding some amelioration of the "eye thing".
Just wanted to offer my words, since it seems we are experiencing the same thing.

As for cleansing, I haven't done a whole lot. I attempted The Master Cleanse maybe about a year or two ago and only lasted 2 days. But even those 2 days felt beneficial. Also around that same time I was taking Clarkia 's parasite removal tincture for many months. I also fast for 1 day every once in a while (every couple of months maybe).
My diet for the past year or more has consisted of things like oatmeal, grits, wheat bread, bagels, virgin coconut oil instead of butter (for the most part), some fruits (especially bananas) and vegetables, beans, basmati rice, noodles (spaghetti etc), water, frozen concentrate fruit juices. Very little meat or dairy. The only major downside to my diet currently, that I am aware of, is that I still eat junk food like chocolate and potato chips from time to time (maybe once a week on average).
Up until a couple years ago (when I actually started paying attention to eating healthier), my diet was rather poor. Fast food, carbonated soft drinks (coke/pepsi, mt dew, etc), meat and dairy were all fairly common, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were still some built up toxins being released. That thought never even crossed my mind, so thanks for mentioning it. :)
If toxins can be released in that way, then I'm sure that is part of it, combined with my head & face just not being used to that kind of increased pressure. I think I have slightly low blood pressure to begin with, so that may also be a contributing factor.

I just chatted with my acupuncturist about this reddening around the eyes, which for me has occurred only recently. He feels it is connected to spleen function. My acupuncture treatments are working to address a spleen deficiency due to an old illness, so that may be why my situation is improving. He said that when bruising or spider veins and this kind of thing are indicated, in tcm or acupuncture they usually look to the spleen.
Just a thought.

Ahhh I don't know much about the spleen but I'll look into it, thanks. :)
I also forgot to mention that I have a metal tooth filling (thankfully only one) which I guess is highly toxic due to the mercury. I've only read a little bit about it, but I guess that could be source of toxins especially in the area of the face.

Now I have come across a book by Bhartiya Yoga Sansthan, New Delhi where sirsasana comes with a warning for the "grahasthas", meaning married couples or u may say, ppl with active sexual life.... Any body has got any ideas on this?

I have seen references in other books printed in India as to what sort of asana practice is appropriate for "householders" and I've also seen references to what is appropriate for women...not pregnant or menstruating women.....just women in general. I even read one book that said that "ladies" should refrain from practicing yoga asanas, but instead should take a "nice stroll in the evening".
As a woman I have to sift through this stuff and decide for myself, were these words coming out of more outdated notions about peoples roles in society. Traditionally women did not practice yoga asanas much in India because it involved moving the body about and perhaps drawing attention, and separating the legs etc. etc. However the scriptures say the first student of yoga was Parvati, and the first teacher Siva, her consort.
I mention this because I do believe you have to put this sort of statement in context. I believe, however that sirshasan being contraindicated for someone with an active sexual life probably comes out of ideas about prana and apana. When we engage sexually we move energy (apana) in a downward fashion with respect to the chakras. Sirshasan is the most potent asana due to how it draws the energy upward (prana).
I think you have to make up your own mind about how the practice feels for you and what works for you. My guru, Swami Sivananda always encouraged women to practice, and to my knowledge counselled householders to practice all asanas, including sirshasan. With your own practice, sensitivity to all these factors increases, and adaptations are constantly made. I do not practice the same way I did 10 years ago, or even one year ago.

I did not in the least think your query was directed to women. I was just citing another example. If women read these books they might feel disheartened to practice asanas. Similarly I think householders should not feel disheartened by what is said about this.
I know that Osho does not recommend Sirshasan at all, to anyone. He feels that it destroys cells in the brain. I don't agree, but mention it in case you are interested in reading what he has to say about it. I'm sorry I can't cite the specific book.
I will take a look at your blog when I have a chance. There are a couple of blogs I enjoy reading, but must say I don't feel compelled to author one myself. To me they reinforce a speed of life and a speed of comprehension that is much too fast for me. Like you must have insight each day and struggle to find something meaningful to say. Mostly I like to sit quiet....let things occur!

Have read some books of Osho and heard him a lot through cassettes. He shouldnt have spoken of Yoga. His insights on meditation have been the guiding principles for me. All the more, his implanting a rebellion in you, is what i respect more about him. Most of us, Indians, need that to think differently. I know his views about Yoga are not in good taste always but then we are not bound to agree with everything that is poured into our ears by these 'gurus'. right? I prefer find my own way, on my own.

I agree with your thoughts on Osho completely. I have been using his tarot cards quite a bit for guidance lately. I find a lot of his thoughts on meditation quite refreshing.

I am affiliated with Int'l Sivananda organization. Lots of locations in India.
No shortage of places to go, however. I am very fond of Kerala.
I am a little out of commission over the next few weeks....taking a break and some cleansing etc. But I will be in touch again, and will look at your blog. I do author a yoga newsletter for my students, usually monthly. I could add you to the list.
