I have some kidney issues and slightly reduced kidney function which is made worse from parasite infection. I started to take Diatomaceous earth today 1tsp x 2 so far and I have noticed that my kidney pain is noticeably worse. I was hunting around on the net and some sites say that silica can help kidneys but also came across some articles that suggested the too much silica can cause irreversible kidney damage (See last sentence of paragraph in article below)
Horsetail is generally considered safe. Horsetail will promote urination, adequate fluid should be consumed when taking horsetail preparations orally. People with heart or kidney disorders should not use horsetail. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take horsetail. Horsetail is contraindicated in those who have edema because of an impaired heart or kidney function. Horsetail is known to block the absorption of thiamine, and lead to thiamine deficiency.
This is only true of fresh horsetail grass (shavegrass). The fresh herb contains the enzyme thiaminase, which is why it can reduce thiamine levels. But the enzyme is destroyed upon drying or cooking.
Long-term use or high doses of horsetail have caused irreversible kidney damage due to too much silica.
This is untrue. I do agree with their statement to avoid the herb in cases of kidney disease or heart disease. I also recommend avoiding it in cases of Raynaud's disease or phenomena as well as diabetes. This is why you never see me recommending this herb since it is impossible to screen everyone who may use the herb. But the problem is not with the silica in horsetail. In fact bamboo is 7 times higher in silica than horsetail grass, but I recommend this because it is a much safer silica source. The problem with horsetail grass is that it contains nicotine, which constricts the blood vessels. This can lead to problems in people with already impaired blood perfusion such as diabetics, or those with kidney disease, Raynaud's or heart disease. Bamboo on the other hand actually dilates the blood vessels increasing circulation. So it does not pose the dangers of horsetail grass.
Can you please give me your input on this. Thanks very much
EDIT - tried some parsley tea and the pain is worse again, now all over my back - a little bit concerned.
This really sounds like an issue of calcium oxalate stones. You should avoid oxalate sources which include parsley. Here is a link with foods containing oxalates:
http://www.seekwellness.com/incontinence/low-oxalate-diet.htm
Some herbs are also high in oxalates such as rhubarb root, sorrel, yellow dock, purslane and cat's claw.
Excess vitamin C in the body also breaks down in to oxalic acid. So do not take high levels of vitamin C.
No protein in the urine. But I do get gout-like symptoms--a pain in my right big toe from time to time. It starts out softly then rises then subsides, not acute like classic gout. It goes away for days maybe weeks at a time. Been going on for about 3 or 4 years. I know all about purines, etc., hence the celery seed tea.
Gout can involve a lot more than simply high protein or purine intake. It can also be from alcohol intake, hemolytic anemia, certain medications, hypothyroidism, etc.
And yes, I was using kidney cleanse teas long before the DE. I've used about 6 different ones now and I think they all work, but slowly. (watermelon/seed, chanca piedra, concoction (w/ marjoram, cat's claw, comfrey, fennel, etc), nettle leaf, magnesium malate, celery seed. I've also been doing tomato juice/celery/parsley but I'll probably stop that due to the calcium content.)
Again cat's claw and parsley are not recommended in cases of kidney disease due to the oxalic acid content.
"It can also be from alcohol intake, hemolytic anemia, certain medications, hypothyroidism, etc."
In the last few years I've had various blood tests--my numbers have always been normal. Is there any way they can test to find out the cause of my gout symptom? I don't drink and I don't take medication.
Normal labs will rule out a number of causes. And not drinking and not taking medications rule these causes out. But this still leaves a number of potential causes so it could take a lot of testing to narrow it down further. Since hypothyroidism can cause this and hypothyroidism is pretty common I recommend starting by checking your basal body temperature. A consistently low temp combined with other hypothyroid symptoms can indicate a low thyroid. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water and eating a low purine and uric acid diet.
Im at a lose as to what to do. The pain is still there and there has been quite a noticeable change to the frothiness of my urine which I know is protein even though I dont eat any meat. This kidney pain and frothy urine always go together which is why I was thinking that I may have damaged my kidneys more. Also the fact that I feel very sick and have thrown up plus I have really dark circles around my eyes that have appeared overnight make me think that something is wrong. (Any ideas HV?) I am always dehydrated due to my kidney issues so dont know if this is a bad combination with the silica in the DE as cant find any info on the web.
Still sounds like a kidney stone issue, and they are probably shifting. Maybe from all the water you are drinking with the DE, which is being suddenly excreted through the kidneys.
I also make parsley tea
Parsley contains oxalates. Probably not a good idea right now since calcium oxalate stones are a good probability.
This happened to me also w/ DE but only in the beginning. I have calcium oxalate stones, 'mostly silent.' Here's my theory: if there are crystals, deposits, or small stones in the kidney, they are lodged or embedded in some way in the ducts or tubules, pushing against the tissue causing an indentation. Along comes silica which strengthens arterial walls and similar tissues, so the duct walls or tubules straighten out, i.e. push back against the crystals, narrowing the ducts and tubules, b/c they are returning to their normal, healthy diameter. And this would cause pain.
Only other thing I can think of is that the silica agglomerates together w/ existing crystals, if you have some, basically enlarging whatever debris is there originally. But I've read tons of sites on this, like the ones you mentioned above, but also more scientific ones--no mention of this reaction. I suppose I could do a search on orthosilicic acid+calcium to seriously look...
Sorry to post theories, James, I know you're not a fan of this...
Not a problem, I am guessing as to the possible cause as well. The only thing I really have a problem with is people posting assumptions or proven bogus things, such as "liver flushes" as fact.
The part that has me stumped in the quick reaction. Twenty minutes is hardly enough time for the silica to even be absorbed in any significant amount. So maybe it is something else like the water source, not the silica.
Thanks for your reply as always Hv, however could you elaborate on why the DE could cause kidney pain? The pain comes on about 20 mins after taking it. Today my kidney pain is worse and I am a bit worried I have damaged them in some way, and I also feel incredible sick and have thrown up a couple of times this morning.
Silica is poorly absorbed regardless of the form, so there would not be any way to get enough in to your system to even be a potential problem. If you are prone to calcium oxalate stones this could have something to do with it. Silica increases calcium absorption, which could increase urinary calcium excretion. The only other thing I can think of is something with aluminum or lead being excreted since silica helps to eliminate both.
I am pretty gutted as I really thought that the DE would be of great help in getting rid of my parasites but am now resigned to not being able to use it again.
Going by my experiences so far Im not convinced that herbs alone are going to get rid of my parasite problem and Dr's lab tests have not picked any up for a Dr's prescription is not an option either. The milk kefir helps a bit but only goes so far. Is there anything else other than herbs and fermented foods that you could recommend that is very effective to kill parasites off as I am really struggling physically and now mentally with this.
If you cannot do the DE then the next best choices would be neem leaf with a little yucca root to aid in penetration. Otherwise raw pumpkin seeds, papaya seeds, green papaya and horseradish are all excellent antiparasticals. Again a little yucca root will help with penetration in to parasites and eggs.
Feel better for throwing up and the kidney pain isnt as bad now but my urine was quite dark this morning.
Being dehydrated can cause this. And vomiting can dehydrate you.
