Can you "OD" on it? Yes, you can OD on anything, even water.
Yes, it's 'fortified', but it also contains naturally occuring B's (which is likely why Schulze approved of it). Because all the natural alkaloids/phytochemicals required to process the B vitamins are in there, it's likely FAR less of a stress or imbalance on the body.
The yeast we're after is:
NON-Active Saccharomyces cerevisiae Nutritional Yeast This yeast is grown on beets and pure molasses. It is the second highest source of complete protein in nature, (50%), and the richest source of B Vitamins. It is also a rich source of iron and many other minerals. The yeast we choose is heated high enough to absolutely destroy any yeast activity, but not high enough to lessen the B Vitamin content. It is totally NON active and safe for patients with candida albicans or on yeast-free diets. (from Schulzes Superfood info - he recommends Red Star, which is what we/he uses...as far as we know)
Saccharomyces cerevisiase yeast is also the active yeast found in Brewer's yeast; as you likely know, Brewer's yeast is VERY bitter. I have searched the internet far & wide to find a source for pure saccharomyces cerevisiase yeast, and the only thing (close, but no cookies) I've ever been able to find is from Frontier, with this description:
Brand: Frontier Bulk
Ingredients: Organic yeast autolysate, organic rice flour, sea salt. May contain wheat.
We have no idea how much rice flour & salt is in this, and obviously cannot use anything that 'may' contain wheat (as that would rule out being used for anyone with wheat sensitivities or celiac disease).
I'm not concerned about the nutritional yeast that Schulze used successfully for decades, what I'm concerned about is your nutritional balance and intake. I seem to recall reading one of your posts awhile back where you mentioned you were not juicing (???) and drinking relatively small amounts of purchased carrot juice (???). You should be striving for a gallon of FRESHLY juiced juices with a good nutritional 'mix' and potassium broth and for added nutrition, slippery elm porridge. If you're not doing this, your body is going to be throwing you cravings left & right and you're sabotaging your own healing process (and your body).
All of Dr. Schulzes patients juice-fasted or ate raw/vegan...and they were in FAR worse condition than anyone on this forum. None of them (to my knowledge, as a general rule) had more than 6T of Superfood daily - which equates to 3T of nutritional yeast...yet you're ingesting Superfood and up to 12T of nutritional yeast daily??? Gerson did raw/vegan (with raw liver juice initially, then a liver supplement after he discovered how toxic beef livers really are), with a very occasionall slice of rye bread & cup of yogurt. On Christopher's 'official' IP, there was 100% juices for the first 3 weeks (plus slippery elm porridge), and then he started allowing one meal a day of raw/vegan food as below:
It's okay to "up" the Superfood to more than 6T (with the good balance it has of all the other nutritional goodies), but I advise against that much nutritional yeast. And EVERYBODY needs to remember this:
Because of the years of improper eating, the body is now suffering from malnutrition. This is because food is not being assimilated, causing starvation of the bodies cells. It is not the amount of food that has been eaten matters, but the quality and how well it has been assimilated. We may take a healthy quantity of food into our bodies, but only that which has been properly assimilated can be utilized for rebuilding and repairing cells and malfunctioning areas. Proper assimilation is acquired by drinking the solid foods and chewing the liquid food. This is an old and true axiom. What this means is we should thoroughly chew our solid foods which mixes the saliva with the food until it becomes liquid, and then we drink it. The liquid foods must be swished (or chewed) in the mouth, then swallowed. The saliva thoroughly mixed with the foods is the key that opens up the doors of digestion. Without mixing saliva with the food, the balance of the digestive juices are not activated for good assimilation. By gulping or inhaling our food without properly mixing saliva with it, we get only eight to ten percent of its value. By properly chewing, we can raise this to forty or forty-five percent. The remainder is generally cellulose or indigestible fiber. We not only receive better health but also save money. Food is one of our largest expenditures. If we can get four to six times better assimilation and use four to six times less food, we are saving a lot of money! By this simple method alone, which gives better assimilation, we gain superior health and a happier life. With one fourth or one third of the food we have been used to eating, we can receive much more power and energy. Remember, a large part of attaining good health results from chewing both solid foods and liquid food
Blessings of health -

I thought Dr. Schulze grows his own yeast? I don’t think he specifies which yeast he uses on his website. The non-fortified brewer’s yeast I found at a local health food store is not tasty at all, so I went back to Redstar which is super yummy! I just wish they have a non-fortified version.
I'm still juice-fasting, Day 47, sorta (had a few bite-size salads/fruits). After the 3rd LF (Day 27), things didn't seem to go very well.... LF seems to wear me out, with or without ES. I feel very weak, really nauseous, waving back and forth, starting to lose weight, poor sleep, undereye circles and puffy eyes. I'm becoming more irritable, holidays are my worst nightmares. There were times I wanted to quit fasting, but I know the healing has just begin, I shouldn’t stop now. I'm hoping it's a just a phase, it’ll pass, I need to stick to fasting until I’m completely healed. I know that my digestion and assimilation is still quite poor, with all the juice fasting and CEs I do, my skin and hair shouldn’t be dry at all. Esp. after LF, I’d get really dry, itchy scalp with lots of dandruff!?! Is that normal? I’ve been really gassy lately, explosive, high pressure GAS, esp., after CE or in the middle of sleep (while the liver is at work?) My husband asked if my anus has turned into a trumpet…… LOL! As for elimination, the undereye circles and the slightly yellow palms are definitely not a good sign. I take 8 IF#1 a day, 1-2 natural bms and 1-2 CEs clean me out pretty well. I tried the AC poultice on the liver overnite. It didn’t draw out anything and still smells quite fresh the next day. I dunno what’s that suppose to mean. I’m going to do the clay bath as soon as I get the clay.
I did my 4th LF over the memorial weekend - a big 3/4" golden stone came out. That was very encouraging! Although I’m still experiencing all the aforementioned symptoms and becoming increasingly sensitive, my right rib and the reciprocal left lower spine are constantly feeding and yanking each other. I can feel every inch of the muscles wrapping around the spine are trying to release! They’re struggling and being held and locked by my right upper body. I know I need to flush more often. Meanwhile, I’m hoping the milk thistle seed would come to the rescue and the BC&F tincture will help with the repair and nourish the damaged tissues.
I finally realized superfood is the one messing up my taste bud; although I didn’t take that much of it, only 4-6Tbsp daily. But, living solely on SF and carrot juice on those dreadful post LF days did throw me off balance. I need to slowly re-build my superfood tolerance and rotate my juice more often. I’ve been cutting down on carrots and taking a break from all the herbs (except IF#2) as well as superfood for the last couple of days, I have to say I feel much less nauseous (stop detoxing!?!). It's nice to take a break, reset, and re-start. Thinking back, my taste buds have really changed… When I 1st started IP, I didn’t like the yeast in SF, as I go deeper into IP, I wanted more and more of it until I’m totally hooked and OD’ed!
>>>
The Fourth Week and On
Continue to rotate the three juices each week as before. This program is life- sustaining as the patient is taking rapid-healing and wholesome food. If the patient desires more solid food, just add one solid meal each day.
<<<<
What is Dr. Christopher’s take on rotating 3 juices each week? (Sorry if it’s on the CDs, I couldn’t read them on my primary PC, drive compatibility issue.) Anyways, I take minimum of ½ to 1 gallon of carrot juice daily. I used carrot juice as a base for all my veggie juice. Apple, parsley, garlic, ginger, lemon I consume on a daily basis. The others I rotate, like the neutral greens (lettece, celery, cucumber), the blue/purple (kale, beets, cabbage) and whites (cabbage, fennel, potatoes). I take watermelon once in a while (with lots of ginger or cayenne). Other mushy fruits like mango, papaya, peaches I either eat (one slice) and put the rest through the juicer and mix with water; everything at very low rpm. My dinner is usually a few cloves of garlic with some oil, lemon and black pepper (It’s kinda like Dr. Schulze’s mild LF w/o the water). I’ve been treating myself with a few very thin slices of raw potatoes lately.
I’m glad to know about Dr. Christopher’s alternate meal plan… But, given my conditions, I’m really not sure if I’m ready to do one solid meal each day?

Not familiar with Gerson's therapy... Is rye bread and yogurt okay? I love those! But again, don’t know if I’m ready, esp. for bread and diary.

I thought Dr. Schulze grows his own yeast? Who KNOWS what he really does now???!!!! He won't publicize ANY of his formulas, nor will he give specific ratios, nor will be clarify the 'yeast issue. don’t think he specifies which yeast he uses on his website. He recommends Red Star specifically by name & # in the SYL manual . It certainly appears that in his "new & improved" and his old Superfood that he uses/used Red Star - the flakes look the same. The non-fortified brewer’s yeast I found at a local health food store is not tasty at all, so I went back to Redstar which is super yummy! I just wish they have a non-fortified version. If I ever find one, I'll let everybody know. I'm still juice-fasting, Day 47, sorta (had a few bite-size salads/fruits). Good job, Tierra!! After the 3rd LF (Day 27), things didn't seem to go very well.... LF seems to wear me out, with or without ES. I feel very weak, really nauseous, waving back and forth, starting to lose weight, poor sleep, undereye circles and puffy eyes. Liver flushes can be VERY Exhausting...but if the "underlined" lasts for more than a day or two, then you likely need to take a bit of a break and give your body a chance to catch up with all your aggressive maneuvers :) I'm becoming more irritable, holidays are my worst nightmares Pardon the phraseology, but (to me, too) holidays suck.. There were times I wanted to quit fasting, but I know the healing has just begin, I shouldn’t stop now. I don't know if I agree with that entirely. There's no reason you couldn't take a 3-5 day break if your doctor within thinks that's a good thing. Remember this is NOT about "textbook perfect" (that can ALWAYS get us into problem zones). Listen closely to your body. You're not going to go 'backwards' on a few days of raw/vegan eating...if that's what seems right to your body. I'm hoping it's a just a phase, it’ll pass, I need to stick to fasting until I’m completely healed. I know that my digestion and assimilation is still quite poor, with all the juice fasting and CEs I do, my skin and hair shouldn’t be dry at all. I didn't know that CE's had anything to do with dry skin - I'd get some Miracle II moisturizer/lotion if I were you - it's THE bomb! Esp. after LF, I’d get really dry, itchy scalp with lots of dandruff!?! Is that normal? nope. Generally dandruff is a fungus that is ultimately cured by the body becoming less acidic. 'Tis likely a true 'detox reaction' from all the toxins/acids you're releasing. I’ve been really gassy lately, explosive, high pressure GAS, esp., after CE or in the middle of sleep (while the liver is at work?) Yes, the liver being compromised and 'unclogging' causes a lot of gas - also the junk being dislodged in your colon. My husband asked if my anus has turned into a trumpet…… LOL! That's hilarious! I know that trumpet! To help with the gas, try some peppermint tea (just put the leaves in a pot and pour boiling water over them, cover and let steep for 10-15 minutes...don't boil the leaves, just pour boiling water on them - no other heat). And you can add a teaspoon of charcoal to every dose of IF#2 - that'll help adsorb some more of the toxins that are being released. As for elimination, the undereye circles and the slightly yellow palms are definitely not a good sign. The yellow skin can be caused by the carrot juice. I take 8 IF#1 a day, 1-2 natural bms and 1-2 CEs clean me out pretty well. I tried the AC poultice on the liver overnite. It didn’t draw out anything and still smells quite fresh the next day. I dunno what’s that suppose to mean. When I do the liver/charcoal poultices, mine smell 'fresh' the next morning too...but I can tell they really help my liver. I’m going to do the clay bath as soon as I get the clay. That'll be great. I did my 4th LF over the memorial weekend - a big 3/4" golden stone came out. Good for you (AND your liver!) That was very encouraging! Applause! Applause! Although I’m still experiencing all the aforementioned symptoms (you've come a LONG way, baby!) and becoming increasingly sensitive, my right rib and the reciprocal left lower spine are constantly feeding and yanking each other. I can feel every inch of the muscles wrapping around the spine are trying to release! They’re struggling and being held and locked by my right upper body. Can you get your hubby to do some seriously deep massage on those tight muscles? And don't forget foot reflexology for those muscles! I know I need to flush more often. Meanwhile, I’m hoping the milk thistle seed would come to the rescue and the BC&F tincture will help with the repair and nourish the damaged tissues. BF&C is great stuff...and milk thistle is fantastic for the liver (in a LOT of different ways). I finally realized superfood is the one messing up my taste bud; although I didn’t take that much of it, only 4-6Tbsp daily. With all the changes you're making in your body, you likely can't just blame the SF for the change in taste buds. Ours have changed many times, depending upon a LOT of different variables. Salt is particularly at issue. But, living solely on SF and carrot juice on those dreadful post LF days did throw me off balance. Solely carrot juice & superfood for more than a week, soley. ::::sigh::: I'm not even going to 'go there'. I need to slowly re-build my superfood tolerance Superfood isn't something you have a "tolerance" or intolerance of (unless you're having 'reactions')...it's just simple nutrition. and rotate my juice more often. PLEASE do start a more well-balanced juice/everthing regime. I’ve been cutting down on carrots and taking a break from all the herbs (except IF#2) as well as superfood for the last couple of days, I have to say I feel much less nauseous (stop detoxing!?!). I don't know if it's 'less detoxing' as much as it is stopping something your body seems to have had WAY too much of (carrots) & nutritional yeast. It's nice to take a break, reset, and re-start. Yes...and re-evaluate! Thinking back, my taste buds have really changed… When I 1st started IP, I didn’t like the yeast in SF, as I go deeper into IP, I wanted more and more of it until I’m totally hooked and OD’ed! Ya live ya learn, eh? We've ALL got to remember that when we first start juice fasting & cleansing that our bodies DO react differently as they get adjusted. When this happens, sticking to the program basics are essential. By adding/changing things because we think we know what is happening and what we think we need (when all we need is to just 'stick with the program' and 'see it through'), we can seriously slow down or negative impact our progress. >>> The Fourth Week and On

The yellow skin can be caused by the carrot juice.
<<<
Absolutely. Whatever carrot that didn’t get assimilated and eliminated (fast enough) got re-absorbed and purged thru the skin. With the amount of carrot juice I consume, it’s a miracle that I didn’t turn into a walking carrot stick. (I used to take a fraction of what I take now and was yellow all over. My MD thought I had some serious liver issue.) I know that it’s the CEs! I dunno exactly what it does to take the load off the other elimination organs, all I know is that after 3 initial CEs, my yellow fingers were gone. Now, I’m only left with slightly yellow palms. I really think CE has been under-appreciated and under-utilized. It deserves the same status quo as LF if not more. I’ve come to realize that LF excels at purging stones esp. big stones and CE excels at purging everything else… mostly mucous, stale bile liquid, thin mud or sludge…). And, for every cycle of LF, the purge always begin with some stones, followed by loads of mucous and ends with some clear mucous or white onion skins. It’s been pretty consistent for me.

Ah… I ran a watermelon test last nite. Wow! I was waving back and forth and I ended up with a mild headache all nite. I think certain fruits/veggies with what Chinese Herbal Medicine would call the “cold/cool” property are way too detox for me. Anyone battling with any chronic diseases are doomed to have over-worked adrenals. And, when you’re on IP, you’re both physically and mentally exhausted, it certainly would hurt to give those little guys a little TLC. I haven’t had a period/menstruation since started IP (~2mths). It’s probably normal, given that all the energy went into detoxing/healing, there’s nothing left for reproduction! Well, at least I try to convince myself with that theory. Anyways, I ordered some ashwangada root powder (for adrenals) as well as your female formula (for the other glands). Siberian ginseng would be next inline if those two didn’t work out.
BTW, I love peach juice too. I also found strawberries or celery leaves very fragrant and can jazz up the juice and get rid of some less palatable taste in certain veggies.
