figuring out my digestive upsets
deducing the cause and making a plan
Date: 12/30/2006 1:12:54 PM ( 18 y ) ... viewed 2975 times i found these things did not work to help wake up my sleepyhead bowels
prune juice
liquorice tea
ginger tea
peppermint tea
increased fruit and/or yoghurt (this has worked in the past)
increased exercise (again, variable results)
i found that fennel seed tea however had an excellent effect. so that got me thinking what it was that fennel was doing to help my problem - which i was hoping would answer my question as to what was causing the problem in the first place.
heres what i found out, summarised:
fennel seeds are carminative and spasmolytic
the volatile oil (found in the seeds) is anti-inflammatory
fennel seeds increase the digestive fire in ayurvedic theory
fennel seeds can help clear the upper digestive tract
fennel seeds have tonifying action on the colon
so to me, that says my adventures in constipation were caused by:
clenched/rigid bowel muscles due to stress
inflamed and congested upper tract
this makes so much sense! i can see how the two causes are interrelated with the first contributing to the second and vice versa. i can also see how the two causes have come about in my life.
my model for how fennel is working on me on the inside:
carminative and spasmolytic releasing the clenched bowel muscles
tonifying action gently helping them get going again and recover
anti-inflamatory for the upper tract, and clearing action moving the irritants through
stirring up the digestive fire again after days?weeks?months? of it being dormant because of above causes.
i can see so clearly how a day or two of careless eating on top of the problem of chronic stress so easily results in disruption of my bowel movements! im going to research more the function and biochem of the small bowel to see what it is that is causing the inflammation. my thoughts is that it is too much acid forming foods overwhelming it when it is already weak from the stress and not being supported by the rest of the digestive tract.
so now, after i research i am going to put a plan for healing my poor digestive tract. now i have a feel for whats happening inside i feel sorry for my bowels and i want to help them heal!!!!!
