Big, Tremendous Oops

I got a rate increase letter dealing with my insurance. I work for a small company that offers me no benefits. So I have to pay for my insurance out of pocket. When I got the policy, I bought an individual policy. The agent who sold me the policy said that was all I needed, since it was just me. I believed him. (This violates one of my rules to never believe what someone tells me at face value.) Anyway, I have been paying into this plan for 3 years. I’m reading the particulars about my insurance and I notice that maternity benefits are only offered to people with family plans. Huh? What? Why would one person have a family plan? The only way to fix this is to beef up my plan. I’m okay with that, but it changes my effective date. I wouldn’t be eligible for maternity benefits (prenatal care) until October 1, 2007! There is an excellent chance that I’m currently pregnant. And even if I wasn’t, I plan to deliver long before October 1, 2007.
Think girl…. My Guy doesn’t have insurance yet on his job. The laws are such today that you can add people you aren’t related to on the policy. I wonder if he’d be willing to do that? It’s not just about me; it’s his child as well. I could get another job and hold off on the pregnancy diagnosis until then. Then I might be eligible. But that means I couldn't get prenatal care until then. There is always Medicaid. I so don’t want to do that, but without the appropriate insurance, the maternity bills could bankrupt me.
I didn’t see this one coming. Is this what motherhood is going to be like?
