TVs' assault on our psyche - Its the ADVERTISMENTS
Ads are not piffle, they are effective and a major source of stress.
Date: 6/7/2006 11:50:04 PM ( 18 y ) ... viewed 2207 times Ok, I am just winging this, after seeing a replay of a hockey game from the early 1980s on TV just now. What I noticed was that I felt somewhat relaxed, sort of like the calmness we get from watching ocean waves; my mind was focused on the game and that seemed to relax me.
What was the difference from that game on TV, and the live Cup final game I watched on TV two hours ago?
- no ads along the boards... just white, plain, simple. It is really different, you think you are in a foreign country watching hockey.
Then I saw another ad, selling us something. And another, telling me to worry about a disease under my toenails.
Since the 1980s, there has been an explosion of advertising on every inch of space, everywhere we look, at all times. On your clothing too - silly people actually PAY to advdertise for Addidas and so on, and then when I talk to them I am again faced with an ad..
FACED WITH A DECISON actually. Even tho we say NO to most ads, that is still a decision - I don't need that. Or one that is just what I need, but it will cost me money, do I have enough, another decision. Thats what ads do to us, for one thing. It might seem benign, but add all the ads up and we get stressed I think.
Thats just the tup of this iceberg. The ads content, the high pressure that they can do without showing it is stunning - the best minds on the planet are recruited for advertising ya know. Some of them at least. Ads are a work of brilliance, too bad it wasn't for good instead of evil, its pure genius at times.
The ads with subliminals, and the ads with guilt or fear really makes us crazy.
Flip. Change channels. Look away. Mute. Talk over them. Whatever method you use is fine, but don't allow yourself to be exposed to whatever hidden and not so hidden pressures and psychological tactics of advertising. This isn't paranoia, its the only logical reaction to the powerfull messages of advertising. Nobody is immune, we must avoid.
Obesity is from ads - food ads are causing eating, thats why they were made. And we have too much arbitrary eating these days, its killing us.
Obesity ois also from stress - the reaction to stress is often eating. And TV ads and other ads all cause us stress - the decision thing or the fear or guilt.
Ok, so I am quickly getting tired now, its my disease [CFS]I can hardly spell now.
Two more thoughts -
But get UNBRANDED. And unhooked from whatever messages are happening, get away from them they are dangerous. Seriously, they are.
When a society spends fully 15% of our purchasing power on advertising, and that up tpo 25% of the cost of products is due to advertising costs, the ads better be effective. And they are, using all means of tactics and psychology.
