Art in Balboa Park
Art in San Diego- freebies in Balboa Park 1,2,3 December...2 reviews of local exhibits, 1 movie review and a smattering of personal history

Take advantage of this offer- All museums open and free at night. I'm not sure about the day- but most are working anyway.
I saw "Only Skin Deep" at the MOPA yesterday. it was not an earthshattering revelation, but an interesting commentary on being another color besides white in America...
Mingei has what looks to be interesting exhibit- folk art, and of course the Main Museum has a tribute to India- too bad I'd already seen that one before I knew about the free nights- This one I highly recommend even if you're not a yogi
Most of the paintings come from 15,16,17th century..from the different regions of India- much on the Punjab, and a couple of Sihks in there, they styles are explained and notated...fascinating- It took me 2 hours to do the whole exhibit but some will not spend as much time- still an hour to get through all the artwork.
Those are 2 I've seen first hand...The museum of man has a mildly interesting permanent collection, Natural History I haven't been there in ages...
and across the way from that is the Spanish Village 30 or so artisans. Studio 25 is artglass, my buddy Leslie does that, and her friend Terry does the framework. Terry and Leslie are bidding on the Tree Art down by the Star of India-If you haven't seen it it's worth a nice walk down the wharf to Broadway Pier to see the "tree Art". I couldn't help myself, I loved the Shoe Tree..So Kitch...and I also loved the metal sculpture of the Triton- I really love art....
My father, when he was living, was an above average artist, as was my Grandmother who actually was a college graduate back in the early 1900's- she had a coming out party in St Joe, Mo...with a picture in the local paper with her unceremoniously playing her cello- that big old thing thrust between her knees and the bow at ready in her crooked arm. What a sight! She was a local artist and when I was growing up in Mission Hills we had a kiln in the back yard for her pottery- way before it was trendy-
There was a Stubbs- fathers side, painting in a museum in London, of a beautiful horse...Stubbs started doing commissions of Royalty on their steeds...then he dumped the royalty and just painted his love, the horses. I guess he could sell his pictures or he had no need of the commissions anymore. Good On you Stubbsie!
Also just as an aside, I went to see Shop Girl up in SFO and it is a surprisingly real portrayl of a rich man and a young girl...a young depressed girl- her pain was real..but the ending was very nice..and I really like the symmetry of the caracters and the plot...
